Nutrition and Mental Health: Feeding Your Mind and Soul
By Amin Kassim, Founder of Greater Than
We talk a lot about physical strength, training, and eating clean. But none of that matters if the mind isn’t right. Mental health affects how we think, process, relate, and show up for life. And while a lot of people turn to therapy or medication, we often forget that food, movement, and spiritual discipline all play a major role in how we feel day to day.
This isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about building a lifestyle that supports your mind and soul the same way you support your body. Here’s how I’ve come to understand it.
Food That Supports the Mind
1. Fatty Fish
Omega-3s aren’t hype. They’re essential. Salmon, sardines, tuna are loaded with healthy fats that help reduce inflammation and support brain function. If you’ve ever felt mentally foggy or emotionally off, there’s a good chance your brain needs more fuel. Omega-3s support serotonin the same neurotransmitter that keeps your mood steady.
2. Dark Chocolate
I’m not talking about candy bars. I mean real dark chocolate which has low sugar and high cocoa content. It’s rich in flavonoids that help blood flow to the brain. And sometimes, it just lifts your mood. It’s a simple add-on to a protein shake or snack that gives your brain a little boost without crashing your system.
3. Berries
Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries are packed with antioxidants that fight off oxidative stress. If you’re training hard or under a lot of pressure, stress builds up in the body. Berries help protect your brain cells and improve communication between them, which makes a difference in how sharp and focused you feel.
4. Leafy Greens
Spinach and kale are underrated when it comes to mental health. They’re loaded with folate, a B vitamin your brain needs to make neurotransmitters. When folate levels are low, your mood can crash. You don’t have to love the taste. You just have to know what it’s doing for you.
Simple Habits That Keep the Mind Steady
Stay Hydrated
Sounds basic, but most people aren’t drinking enough water. Dehydration messes with your energy, mood, and focus. If your body’s dry, your brain’s not firing right. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty make hydration a habit.
Move Your Body
Exercise clears the fog. Whether it’s jiu-jitsu, running, or a hard lift session, movement gets blood flowing and releases endorphins. Those chemicals matter. They’re your natural stress relief. Your way of fighting back when life gets hectic.
Protect Your Sleep
Sleep isn’t just rest, it’s repair. Your brain needs that time to process, reset, and heal. Skimping on sleep might feel like you're "hustling" or "working-hard" but long term it costs more than it gives. Prioritize it. Guard it like it matters. Because it does.
Feeding the Soul Matters Too
Prayer
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is get quiet and pray. Not because everything's perfect but because that connection grounds you. Prayer lowers stress, brings perspective, and reminds you you’re not doing this alone. I’ve seen what happens when I skip it and I’ve seen the peace that shows up when I don’t.
Meditation
This one is difficult for most people, especially if you're like me and can't sit still. Just sitting in silence with awareness helps rewire your brain. It trains you to slow down and sit with your thoughts instead of running from them. Over time, it actually changes how you react to stress. That’s a tool worth having.
Key Takeaways
You can’t separate the body from the mind or the spirit. What you eat affects how you think. How you move shapes how you feel. And what you believe determines how you carry it all. This isn’t about being perfect but about being intentional. Feed your mind. Feed your soul. It all works together.
